Vera : Swallow The Sun happens to be a band we are following since the beginning. We are speaking about fifteen years of affinity with the Finnish doom/death metal band hailing from Jyvaskyla. When focusing only on quite recent eruptions of inspirations, we would like to refer to the masterpiece Emerald Forest And The Blackbird (2012) and the extensive, comprehensive trilogy Songs From The North I, II & III (2015]; albums that really stand out in the genre due to their ingenious, genuine and personal approach.
With grand feels of dismay we read the news that main composer and our loyal partner for interviews / guitarist Juha Raivio lost his loving partner Aleah Stanbridge. Next we listened to albums such as the releases of Trees Of Eternity, Hallatar and recently the STS EP Lumina Aurea with genuine attempts to come to terms with this immense loss. Also Swallow The Sun will never be the same. They will never lose their top notch quality, but there is a kind of before and after. We surely respect that and consequently we go for a more brief approach this time. The title When A Shadow Is Forced Into The Light refers to the state of mind Juha was finding himself in when he wrote this album in short amount of time after months of ultimate isolation and dealing with this loss. For one time I will not go into details, no deep-draught dive into emotions about every song, every twist and turn, every pro and contra. I only want to state that Swallow The Sun fans will enjoy an amazing new album. Unfortunately it is now coming forth from desperate mourning of true life experiences. Sometimes it feels like sacrilege to listen to these unburdening thoughts, yet it happens to be so precious and genuine that it will leave nobody untouched. Music-wise it happens to be a boundless blend of doom/death metal , black metal and progressive escapades. It is a mixture uniting all subgenres of metal. Those who have a soft spot for melancholic music, should listen to this and they will surely embrace it in the wake of the upcoming total moon eclipse (referring to the album New Moon) and the struggle for life in general. That is eventually the core of this album: lick your wounds and have a bright view on the ultimate manifestation of forces of nature. That is where you will find solace, not in the ongoing rat race of mankind.
