Roel de Haan : ‘BardO’ is Echtra’s fourth full-length album and is the successor to the pretty decent album ‘Sky Burial’. However five years have passed since then and Echtra’s style changed a bit. The American outfit have shifted from typical Cascadian black metal to a more ambient black metal sound and the two 23 minute tracks take their sweet time to reveal their intentions. The listener is lulled into a trancelike state and then dreams away with the repetitive riffs, acoustics, synth and slowly moving waves of music. I’m sure that this is exactly what Echtra intended, but I wonder if a slightly higher amount of energy isn’t missing from this album. Fans of Fauna, Fen and to a lesser extent Wolves In The Throne Room are the likely candidates to like this ‘BardO’.
