Dennis : ‘Hunting Heretics’ is the new mini album of the German old school death metal veterans of Demonbreed, which marks the follow-up to their debut album ‘Where Gods Come To Die’ from the year 2016. About a year earlier, the band was formed out of the ashes of the band Lay Down Rotten and members of Milking The Goat Machine, both bands that have made their marks in the German death metal scene.
With ‘Hunting Heretics’ the band offers five new old school death metal tracks thematically dealing with the era of inquisition and the persecution of heretics. As with their debut album, Demonbreed offers brutal Sweden-Death metal on this mini album. Inspired by such bands as Edge of Sanity, Entombed, Grave and Dismember, but also Bolt Thrower, the band delivers heavy and groovy HM2 buzzsaw guitar riffs with constantly rolling bassdrums and dark melodies. The compositions of ‘Hunting Heretics’ are well-composed and contain plenty of variation which makes them highly suitable for the ultimate headbang-experience. Demonbreed knows how to combine groovy midtempo churning riffs with fast and quick footed old school death metal drumming. The ominous guitar solos add some more melody to the songs and round them off perfectly.
Demonbreed is a welcome guest at death metal festivals in their home country and with the material on ‘Hunting Heretics’ I am sure they will get the fans to headbang not only in the first rows. The songs are well structured and well played and don’t miss their aim. Demonbreed aren’t the most original band in the world, but what the heck, they sure are entertaining with their old school death metal. Fans of OSDM will know how to appreciate this mini album!
