Wim R. : Dave Colwell is an English guitarist who earned his stripes through the years. Bad Company and Humble Pie are on his resume. ’20 Good Summers’ is Colwell’s second solo outing, as he released ‘Guitars, Beers and Tears’ in 2010. Colwell joined forces with another veteran of the rock scene. He and drummer Paul Edwards wrote all the songs for this album. On vocals Colwell was able to drag young gun Adam Barron inti the band. Barron was once a finalist of The Voice UK. On bass we find former Quireboys member Dave Boyce.
’20 Good Summers’ is a nicely varied Classic Rock album, from the more up tempo songs like ’20 Good Summers’ and ‘The Bridge’ to the beautiful ballad ‘Rebel Heart’. The latter really gains strength due to the great backing vocals, Hammond organ licks and a impressive vocal performance by Barron. This album oozes experience, expertise and fun. Take a listen to the gritty ‘Whiskeyland’ for example. That one will do very good in the live environment. With a nice squeaky solo from Colwell as a bonus. On ‘Radio State Of Mind’ Georgia Satellites singer Rick Richards adds his distinctive voice, resulting in a ‘freeway, top down’ song. Dave Colwell released a mighty fine album with ’20 Good Summers’. My prediction is that this band will go down a storm on stage if they tour. Thunder would be a great travel companion, as both band have quite some similarities. Nice job guys!
