Job : Nature Morte is a relatively new French post-black collective that’s releasing their first full-length ‘NM1’ very soon. Formulaic, typical and logical are all words that would describe the record very well, but that’s not to say that there’s nothing of value here. For instance, the crescendo on ‘Through the Perfection of Your Nothing’ is quite something and the slow and brooding ‘Grief’ can really feel like an assault on the senses at times. It just never really feels all that genuine and in a genre that’s built upon “feeling” and “atmosphere”, intentions are ever so important. It’s just a shame that a lot of bands in the genre are resorting to staying within the boundaries of what’s already established – one would hope that a genre that’s so hell bent on atmosphere can find other nooks and crannies to explore.
