Esben And The Witch - Nowhere

Release type: Full-length CD

Roel de Haan : Esben And The Witch is an UK-based post-punk, psychedelic stoner-prog hardrock outfit and this ‘Nowhere’ is their fifth album. Predecessor ‘Older Terrors’ was already a mature album in which introspection, sincerity and atmosphere met with good results. This is continued on ‘Nowhere’. Pivotal point of focus is Rachel Davies’ voice, which could be characterised as a more subdued or ethereal PJ Harvey. Produced in a kind of brutally honest way; hardly any effects are added. Underneath we find mostly a nearly tribal-like layer of drums, soothing guitars and a pronounced bass. Repetition is used to create atmosphere, but occasional bursts of stoner-doom riffs are just enough to liven things up. Although I personally feel the album could use more of these metallic elements to create a more dynamic experience. ‘Nowhere’ is another step up for Esben And The Witch and fans of post-rock and post-punk who won’t shy away from some stoner are in for a treat.
