Roel de Haan : Avast is a Norwegian outfit and this ‘Mother Culture’ is their first full-length, which follows a self-titled EP released in 2016. Avast is what I would call an archetypical post-black metalband. Now don’t take this the wrong way, Avast is no copycat, but their style encompasses many stylistic elements that most would consider typical of the genre. Avast’s style is comparable with the better bands in the field like: Entropia and Au-Dessus. Dynamic, energetic yet also highly emotional; musically ‘Mother Culture’ is as varied can be within the limits of the style. The raucous screams are often contrasted by a post-rockish tremololead or emphasised by the blasting drums and scorching guitars. Of course, there are plenty of doomy parts as well. On ‘Mother Culture’ beauty goes hand in hand with aggression and passion. Avast has made an excellent addition the post-black canon that is slowly evolving away from being formed around Alcest-clones into more black metal oriented waters.
