Wim R. : Christian Tolle is a German guitarist and song writer. Under the moniker of Christian Tolle Project he is releasing his fifth album, entitled ‘Point Blank’. Besides C.T.P. Tolle contributed to many albums through song writing or playing on them. Guitar, bass and drums are played by Tolle himself. He also handled production duties, resulting in a dynamic and crystal clear sound. And wrote all the music (except for the cover ‘Since You’ve Been Gone’). He also recruited some known names for this album. Vocals are handled by David Reece (Accept, Bangalore Choir) and John Cuijpers (Praying Mantis). Reece also penned the lyrics for eight of the songs. On guitar there is Doug Aldrich (Whitesnake, Dio, Dead Daisies) who plays some solos. Same goes for former U.D.O. guitarist Mathias Dieth. So, we indeed have a project on our hands.
The biography talks about Classic Rock with a modern edge. Well, you can forget that modern edge. This is just pure Classic Rock. But brought in a convincing and varied way. Reece and Cuijpers impress with their vocals and really give added value to the songs. Songs like ‘Proceed With Caution’ and Fight Another Day’ have choruses which are not that convincing and take away the fire on these songs. The remaining songs are way above average, with enjoyable guitar work. The title track, ‘Before I Fall’ and ‘Borderland’ are truly great songs. If you like Classic Rock, this album will give you pleasant listening experience. But, there are two points of criticism ; why cover ‘Since You’ve Been Gone’ when it adds nothing to the original we already know? And Tolle will be forced to re release this album as a limited edition, as an added bonus you will receive a magnifying glass, because who is playing on which song is absolutely unreadable in this current booklet.
