Roel de Haan : Iskandr is a Dutch black metal entity and this ‘Euprosopon’ is its second full-length. Iskandr plays raw but atmospheric black metal with a certain feel of urgency. Not that it is particularly fast or brutal, but its intention becomes clear quite fast. Heroic riffing, tortured growls and a twisted sense of harmony. The latter seems to stem from the influence of The Ruins Of Beverast along with slight pagan insertions vocally and riff-wise. The four tracks are quite lengthy and offer a variety of ideas, which mostly work quite well. The mood is firmly set and especially in the slower or more pummelling sections. These make me nodding with approval (not that they need it or anything). And the acoustic sections immediate remind me of Gris, which is definitely meant as a compliment. Sure, the sound could be more defined and some parts are pushing the limits in terms of repetition, but all in all ‘Euprosopon’ is an album has more to offer than meets eye.
