Job : At the end of last year, Terminal Function released their proof-of-concept EP ‘Krakstoren’ that displayed a very Meshuggah-inspired band and I was quite impressed. The Swedish heritage was omnipresent and while the band managed to fuse more melodeath in with the djentier tones, it still felt very raw and maybe a little underdeveloped. ‘The Great Liberator’ is the new EP and it sets the tone – the band has definitely improved on what they already did well and it results in a heavy and focused EP that doesn’t overstay its welcome. The Meshuggah is still very much there, but it seems a lot more modern metal/deathcore has found its way into the mix. ‘The End Delivered’ and ‘Residuality’ are good examples of more of the –core side coming into things, whereas the melodeath hasn’t been pushed away at all. This is a very good sequel, but I really hope the band dives a little deeper and comes up with more originality as a result.
