Dennis : Rogga Johansson doesn’t seem to get bored with releasing old school death metal albums. A quick look at Discogs tells me the notorious Swede released a notable fifteen albums this year with his bands Down Among The Dead Men, Eye of Purgatory, Revolting, Ribspreader, The Grotesquery, To Descend, Severed Limbs and Paganizer to name but a few. Quite a few of his releases are really enjoyable if you’re a fan of old school death metal, not all of them are as good, but at least his death metal heart is in the right place. With ‘Pain Offerings’ Johansson and his mates Brynjar Helgetun (drums) and Dennis Blomberg (guitar) release the sixth Those Who Bring The Torture album to date, and with it we get eight new OSDM tracks that sound kind of similar to old Hypocrisy and an instrumental outro called ‘Intrelude Before The End’. Personally I am a big fan of old school death metal and when listening to this record the music got my attention straight away of course. Those Who Bring The Torture are seasoned death metal musicians who seem to know what they are doing. Yet I miss the excitement that I hear in other OSDM releases and despite the brutal sound these eight loud death metal tracks seem to pass by silently and before you know it, you’re listening to the instrumental outro again, without having the feeling that any of the death metal songs really stuck with you. I think this one is just to generic and too safely played.
