Wim R. : In the last years several bands popped up that do not take themselves to seriously. Image is a important part of their act. Examples are Steel Panther or Alestorm. This is the first time I hear of, American based, Lords Of The Trident. But the band was founded ten years ago and already has seven albums under their belt. This album ‘Shadows Of The Past’ was, successfully, founded through Kickstarter. As you might already assume, Lords Of The Trident do not take things that seriously. The band plays old school metal and dresses outrageously. And, as this genre demands, their original names are unknown. I do not think names like Asian Metal, Pontifex Mortis, Fang VonWrathenstein, Baron Taurean Helleshaar, Master Hercule “Herc” Schlagzeuger will be the ones in their passports. But, what is this band bringing us musically?
Well, it is not bad at all, although originality is not one of the main ingredients. But a song like ‘Figaro’ is a nifty composition. Pompous, a bit kitsch, but seductive. Mainly because of the vocals by Fang VonWrathenstein. It somehow reminds me of Crimson Glory musically. For example in the fierce ‘Brothers Of Cain’. One of the highlight is ‘Reapers Hourglass’. There is a ton of soloing going on in this one. Lyrically, most of the songs are humorous. After checking out the band’s website, they have not played outside the States or Canada. Surprising, as their kind of metal will appeal to European audiences for sure. Tip; if you are on the homepage, check out the extensive and hilarious biography. I think Lords Of The Trident could be a welcome addition to the European festival circuit, bringing fun and great music. This is a entertaining album, musically very enjoyable, lyrically funny and a good production. Time for Lords Of The Trident to sail the European shores.
