Marcel H. : After ‘Skyward’ and ‘Relic’ ‘Rift’ is the third full-length album by Forming The Void in a little over three years’ time. The American sludge band continues along the same lines as before. So easy on the ears slightly progressive sludge which could be described as a slightly more technical melodic Savannah sludge variant. Suitable for fans of bands such as Mastodon, Baroness, Torche, was the first thing that came to my mind when listening to ‘Rift’. ‘Rift’ is characterized by six relative short songs of a maximum of 6.75 minutes and one song, close ‘Shrine’ of ten-and-a-half minutes. All songs, like said before, are slightly progressive but clearly still sludge. All contain earworm parts, you know, parts that you still have singing around in your head hours after hearing them. So, job well done. All in all ‘Rift’ turned into a tasty album that can be recommended to anyone who likes progressive sludge and of melody in their music.
