Koen S. : An intro that sounds as if you played a warped record on your cheap midi-stereo system thirty years ago. That’s the start of the puddle of ancient noise that Moenen Of Xezbeth brings us. Little is known about this band, but there are for sure freaks out there that know the band Perverted Ceremony and it turns out their singer/drummer Morbid Messiah is also involved in this project. This so far unknown Belgian black metal band releases its first long player with 'Ancient Spells Of Darkness...' after their, in the extreme underground, well received demos. Nuclear War Now! Productions is the lucky label that releases this album, since Moenen Of Xezbeth is a diamond in the rough and ‘Ancient Spells Of Darkness...’ could even be considered a classic within 15 years, if there were not released nine hundred albums every day.
The first thing I am thinking of when hearing this slow and simple, but effective black metal is 'Feast Of The Grand Whore' of Rotting Christ's Satanas Tedeum and those who know me will know that, from that moment on, a band can’t do anything wrong anymore in my eyes. Pour some Samael at the time of Worship Him at this, together with a dash of old fashioned Beherit and you get this highly interesting lo-fi situation. Even the primitive synths are reminiscent of those good old days. The dissonant intro, the simple chords, the bone-dry drumming and the easiest solos in living memory are pure authenticity! Recorded in a garage with egg cartons against the walls, old posters of Slayer and Mercyful Fate, an old micro, poor electrical cords and a decrepit analog cassette deck: that is how you create the right atmosphere! A gargantuan record!
