Koen S. : After twenty years of ultimate silence, languishing in the memory of a single black metal devotee, forcing a resurrection on which every Christian would be jealous and hitting back ruthlessly with one of the best black metal records of the year: the Greek veterans of Medieval Demon do it with ‘Medieval Necromancy’. The band was formed by the brothers Karras in 1992, released a couple of demos in the early days, but with the release of their debut ‘Demonolatria, they suddenly were among the Hellenic frontrunners on the now defunct label Unisound Records, together with Rotting Christ, Varathron and Thou Art Lord.
In an asphyxiating atmosphere Medieval Demon carves its way through the darkest caverns of the underworld heading to a Satanic Sabbath. The unorthodox drumming of Lord Apollyon and the agonized vocals by Sirokous accompany the ever-present crushing guitars. A vague air of menace is always present in this Necromti(ati)c and old-fashioned black metal. The obscure prose is intimidating and from opener 'Chthonic Curses' to the closing track 'The Great He Goat' it is a pleasure listening to the delivered goods. Even the acoustic 'Les Litanies De Satan' with its horror-like piano and French lyrics fits perfectly in this ancient mystical story. Original? I say so! Downsides? None! Hearing is believing!
