Dennis : ‘Come Ethereal Somberness’ is the debut album of this young Danish death metal band named Taphos, hailing from the city of Copenhagen. And while I am writing this piece, the band is on tour in Europe in support of Swedish death metal purists Degial. An great combo, since both bands more or less draw their inspirations from the same sources. Just like Degial, Vorum or Phrenelith, Taphos is inspired by raw and occult death metal with a blackened touch, classic old school death metal the way it was played in the early nineties in the US and Scandinavian scenes. Two names come to mind while listening to ‘Come Ethereal Somberness’. First of all Incantation ‘Diabolical Conquest’ era, since I am hearing a lot of atmospheric and occult death metal riffs backed up by aggressive drumming and howling guitar solos that are almost false but not quite. And then there is the vocals that remind me of oldschool Marduk during their ‘Dark Endless’ era. Two killer ingredients if you ask me and they work for Taphos. The seven death metal tracks and three depressive instrumentals recorded at the Ballade Studios (Slaegt, Dead Instrument, Phrenelith) leave you depressed and hopeless after the first listening session. Filthy and violent classic death metal with an occult vibe is what Taphos have to offer and they sure made their point with this deadly debut album.
