Roel de Haan : Panegyrist and its debut ‘Hierurgy’ is an interesting surprise hailing from America. ‘Hierurgy’ is a bombastic, rollercoaster of an avant-garde black metalalbum and takes no prisoners. Fierce, verocious yet chaotic, dissonant, subtle and even epic and times. Imagine a weird mix-up of Arcturus, Smohalla, Ved Buens Ende... and Blut Aus Nord. Vocals range from clean, semi-operatic to screams and growls. And the music goes from jazzy to raging black metal and everything in between. The songs are quite long and this sheer amount of different styles and moods does make it quite a challenging listen, draining even. Despite the almost dizzying style and many shifts, the does have a certain coherence. Perhaps on future releases by Panegyrist the song-writing could be more condensed for a more efficient effect, but to deliver an album this original and bewildering as a debut surely commands much respect, but be warned this is only for the real daredevils out there.
