Vera : After the release of ‘Of Ghosts And Gods’ in 2015, Canadian death metal act Kataklysm really had a heavy schedule in touring to convince the whole world of their skillfulness. In the meantime the Rome inspired Ex Deo was brought to life again as well. Yet the four-piece still found the time to gather in their headquarters and write new songs. The result of these creative explosion we can find early June in the shops, entitled ‘Meditations’.
You will notice at the overwhelming, but also rather modern sound that not only band members (guitarist J-F Dagenais and drummer Oli Beaudoin) have been involved in the production, but famous names as Jay Ruston and Paul Logus too. These guys have just a bit more experience with other styles. Yet do not fear, this album sounds as a bell and has a fine balance between brutal stunners such as ‘Guillotine’, ‘Outsider’ and ‘Narcissist’ in which Kataklysm opens all registers like a young foal during the first days of Spring and on the other hand songs with a more adventurous epic approach. Their imposing sound is massive and tight-as-hell, just listen to ‘Born To Kill And Destined To Die’ and ‘What Doesn’t Break Doesn’t Heal’ and you will know what I mean. In the longer tracks ‘In Limbic Resonance’ and final song ‘Achilles Heel’ (instrumental) epic feels prevail, resulting in beautiful melodious guitar skills and interesting breaks. You hear that the band has found a new élan in working together in the same room when writing and it makes ‘Meditations’ after all these years of loyal service ultimately brutal, but fetching as well. Amazing stuff from this hyperblast machine from Canada! With bonus DVD where they integrally play ‘Shadows & Dust’ and ‘Serenity In Fire’ live in Munich in 2017.
