Dennis : Micawber is a modern US death metal band named after the fictional character Mr. Micawber from Charles Dickens 1850 novel 'David Copperfield', who was a poor yet optimistic person that believed that sooner or later 'something will turn up'. This definitely holds true for this Green Bay, Wisconsin based quartet Micawber, who have been around since 2005, and independently released three EPs and two full length albums and toured the US and Europe in support of Sepultura, Vader, Vital Remains and Internal Bleeding. All the hard work paid off and thus with this, album number three, indeed something turned up! The band inked a deal with Prosthetic Records to release their third studio album and first one ever on a record label entitled 'Beyond The Reach of Flame'.

I must say I hadn’t heard of Micawber before and even though they toured Europe earlier this year with Internal Bleeding, Fleshgore and Sacrificial Slaughtter I didn’t catch them playing live, since they were not playing the Netherlands Deathfest, unlike their three tourmates. They say don’t judge a book by its’ cover, but after seeing the Dan Seagrave (Entombed, Morbid Angel) illustration on the cover of 'Beyond The Reach of Flame' this album it immediately aroused my interest. And luckily I wasn’t wrong, because the music of Micawber is anything but boring. On contrary, the eight tracks on 'Beyond The Reach of Flame' are an explosive burst of modern technical death metal with a twist of sludge, black and prog. The compositions on this record are full of fast guitarriffs, exciting blastbeats, tempo changes and challenging twin guitar solos. The music of Micawber is aggressive yet melodic and full of catchy grooves and at moments where the band slows down the music becomes almost mesmerizing. The guys in Micawber know how to play their instruments and have eye for detail and dynamics. With their modern death metal displayed on this record they are ready for the next step in their career. If you count bands like Decapitated, Prycroptic or Origin to your favorites, then 'Beyond The Reach of Flame' is highly recommended!
