Marcel H. : Soldat Hans started as a noise band which primarily played improvised sets and their name was taken from a fairy tale by the brothers Grimm. Nowadays the band plays a kind of avant-garde metal. ‘Es Taut’ contains three songs which clock in at a total of 54 minutes and the opening song itself at some 26 minutes. The music is a mix of post rock, doom, dark jazz and a minimal pinch of black. The band managed to make it all sound coherent. Never does it derail into over the top craziness. All instruments complement each other and the music flows naturally. It doesn’t come across forced for even just one second. It is all reasonably mid to down tempo, but that isn’t disturbing at all. At times the band reminds me, in the relaxed parts, of a band such as Bohren & Der Club Of Gore. Especially when a saxophone is employed. All in all a fine album which will find its way to my player in future.
