Vera : An acoustic cooperation of two established musicians from the progressive rock/metal scène is hidden behind the poetic title ‘The Sun Will Dance In Its Twilight Hour’. Under the moniker Damian Wilson & Adam Wakeman they release their second album, the successor of ‘Weir Keeper’s Tale’ (2016), but of course they have been working together for many years in other constellations, for example in Headspace.
We are dealing here with ten brand new acoustic songs in which Damian sings and plays guitar. Adam plays piano of course, but also acoustic guitar and does some singing. They got some help from the following guest musicians: Andy Dunlop (Travis) on guitar, pop drummer Ash Soan on percussion, Tony Woollard on cello and Hayley Sandersson as background female singer. Mix and mastering was done by pop producer Gary Stevenson and metal producer Mike Exeter, so I guess these famous guys took the best of both worlds concerning production and sound. The mostly introvert, thoughtful songs are regaled with lyrics coming straight from real life experiences. With the sober instrumentation, mainly the voice of Wilson is leading the songs and consequently the album is a kind of prolongation of his most recent solo album ’Built For Fighting’. The genre can be described as singer-songwriter stuff, but he manages to carry an album with his expressive voice. It is storytelling, polished and a proper album to sink in your couch with a good glass of wine, coming at ease while falling in reveries about this human existence. Thus nothing new under that dancing sun, but sometimes renewal is not necessary.
