Sicktus : The Swedish / American ensemble The Grotesquery have released three albums between 2010-2015, ’Tales Of The Coffin Born’ (2010), ’The Facts And Terrifying Testament Of Mason Hamilton: Tsathoggua Tales’ (2012) and ’Curse Of The Skinless Bride’ (2015). The three conceptual albums together tell a tale which is firmly rooted in the style and setting we all know from the works of H.P. Lovecraft and Edgar Allen Poe.
And now there is ‘The Lupine Anathema’ – an album that already was in the works in 2015, when we did an interview with vocalist and lyricist Kam Lee. No trilogy this time, the album is a standalone one – although the door on some kind of “Werewolf Chronicles” isn’t completely shut. Lyrically, the inspiration once again comes from early (proto/Gothic) horror and the likes of (mainly) Lovecraft and Poe. Musically, the band remain true to their roots as well: an amalgamate of British, Florida and Swedish death metal from the olden days, with a hint of doom. Heavy, melodic, catchy at times, with groove sprinkled throughout, neat pace changing. The band go from bulldozer / tank mode to mysterious and dark, to catchy and melodic. They are effective and kill on all those fronts, resulting in a highly enjoyable oldschool melodic horrordeath album. Welcome back, gentlemen!
