Marcel H. : Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard. Whenever I see such a band name a huge *sigh* escapes me. Jeez, another of those super cool look at me smoke joints stoner band. Gentlemen, and in this case also lady, please act normal and try not to come across all standard ‘cool’ weed smoking stoner-like. The Welsh band band presents us with a 12”split with the North Irish Slomatics. Of the two Slomatics is by far the better known band.

On to the music. Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard serves two songs clocking in at almost 23 minutes on side A and Slomatics three songs for a total of twenty minutes on side B. Due to the female vocals and the sludgy stonerish doom MWWB plays the band reminds me of Windhand, albeit a couple of divisions lower. MWWB tends to bore pretty quickly due to the monotonous musical and vocal presentation. However, there will most probably be hordes of people lapping it all up because th band features a female vocalist. Slomatics pummels and bulldozes us in a way only they can do, sluggish, slow and low, reverb on the vocals and just destroy. Three well executed songs that captivate from start to finish. At first listen quite monotonous, but after closer inspection full of fine nuance differences within the songs.

Are you a fan of this sort of music? Just check out the split, even if it is only for Slomatics’ contribution to it.
