Wim R. : Well, it will be quite a challenge to beat the craziest album title this year. Cologne-based Cherokee decided to call their EP ‘Wakan Tanka Nici Un’. This is native Indian American for ‘may the great spirit walk with you’. Thankfully, this German band does not climb the stage in Indian suits and war paint. Musically Cherokee can be categorized in the Classic Rock department. Production-wise ‘Wakan Tanka Nici Un’ is a quite weak outing. The sound is dry, and not all instruments are well balanced in the mix. Frontwoman of Cherokee is lead singer Laura Vesprini. But her vocals are capable to send hordes of coyotes back in to their holes. Sometimes she is really out of tune, but most of all her singing is unbalanced with that significant German sound to it. After listening to this four track EP, I wonder if the band was ready to release an EP. The guitar work in opener ‘Ethelred, Hero Of Trist’ has some stronger moments. Otherwise the songs lack character, composition skill and catchiness. It is a good thing that Cherokee was not around when the Indians were. The Indians might have thought that these Germans were possessed by evil spirits and firewater. Otherwise there would have been four scalps on the totem… Egogahan!
