Leon : Whenever I see the logo of FREIA Music I get happy immediately, this Dutch label has a lot of young Dutch progressive rock artists under their wings. A number of them, amongst which Semistereo and Golden Caves, have great potential and are prominently on my radar. It’s safe to say that they’re an important source of young talent! Under the label is also the solo project of Christiaan Bruin called Inventions. You could recognize Bruin from his band Sky Architect who’ve released a very well received album last year.

Bruin has been very busy because he also released his first Inventions album last year with the name ‘Maze’, which didn’t get a great review by colleague Vera. I have to be honest and say that ‘Curiosity’ won’t get a very good score from me either. The music is very unique and incomparable with anything that’s on the market today, but that’s probably for a reason. All the songs are made using the same ingredients; a semi up-beat tempo with minimalistic ‘drums’, some simple keyboard melodies with some wider keyboard sounds, supported by guitar chords, no dynamic, and monotonous vocal sounds. The result is that all the songs just don’t vary enough and that I really want to listen to something else after just hearing two or three songs. There are some melodies that have potential but needed different arrangements for me.

I can’t say much more about this to be honest, there is just little happening to make it interesting. Maybe, like colleague Vera said, there is a small group of people who might like the music, but I’m certainly not part of that group.
