Pim B. : The uncrowned kings of funeral doom are back with a new album and finally also with a review in Lords Of Metal. I am talking about Mournful Congregation whom we last wrote about in 2009. The album ‘The Book Of Kings’ from 2011 and the 2014 EP ‘Concrescence Of The Sophia’ apparently never reached us. Especially the promotion around the latter was futile. I still remember I coincidentally stumbled upon that release and I was able to add it to my collection. I’m glad because in my perception these Australians form the best funeral doom band on this planet. Of course there are other great bands in the genre, but when I’m completely honest most bands don’t appeal to me at all. It’s not just about playing slow and sounding heavy. I expect some substance and most bands can’t deliver exactly that. Mournful Congregation does deliver the goods, which they show us on ‘The Incubus Of Karma’.
Next to the fact this is slow and heavy, this band knows how to draw your attention. Even when most songs arte over the 15 minute mark. The well thought-out arrangements and fantastic guitar parts are responsible for this. The melodies are outstanding and have a progressive character. Here and there I have to think of While Heaven Wept, even when that band’s style is quite different. The common ground can be found in the intensity and beauty. In their 25 years of existence Mournful Congregation shows they have a nose for that. They layered song material touches you in the deepest part of your soul. And that’s what counts in funeral doom. Highly recommended!
