Sicktus : The Texan outfit Mammoth Grinder have been around for some ten-ish years now. The power trio built around vocalist/guitarist Chris Ulsh (Impalers, Power Trip)have delivered three full-lengths at the universe’s doorstep during that time span, of which ’Extinction Of Humanity’ (2009) and ’Underworlds’ (2013) are the most “recent”. Now, through Relapse Records, they add a fourth to that list, to complete the quartet.
On ‘Cosmic Crypt’ the band stay true to their style: a blunt battering of grindishly delicious chopping and churning... Punky, grinding, crusty, gritty, muddy DIY death’n’grind. The offerings are far from subtle on this one, but what they offer, they offer with full conviction, for eleven tracks and just under half an hour. Napalm Death meets Autopsy meets Black Breath meets Entombed, with bits and pieces that do slow / bog down a bit, but on the whole, most of it is served up in the no-nonsense, straightforward, merciless plowing action style. Grind’n’roll, baby! Gamechanger? Nope. Highly enjoyable? Yup! Raw, straight shooting, grin inducing. I like it!
