Berto : Kaoteon is a band with a colorful history. Originating in Lebanon and currently operating from Amsterdam, they have not been in the news in recent years. Their previous album dates back to six years ago. The founder was once arrested in his own country, because the government thought that they were acting devilish. Fortunately, there is now a new album in the form of 'Damnatio Memoriae'. Helped by the enormous talents of Fredrik Wildigs (drummer in Marduk) and Linus Klausenitzer (ex-bassist of Obscura) it has become a real gem in the current extreme music scene.
The vocals are from plain raw to slightly manic (and maybe over the top sometimes), the riffs sound sick, but always addictive and rhythmically there is of course nothing to complain about with the aforementioned session musicians. Mr. Wildigs is really showing his huge amount of talent because he really sounds amazing with his inimitable drum parts. There is a lot of variation in the songs too: opener 'A Breath' is written with the more 'subdued' songs of Mayhem in mind, while the title track is again a manic explosion. Kaoteon has, of course, all the experience on board given their origins and past to create a very dark atmosphere and all the emotion they may have had to endure in recent years have been translated to music on 'Damnatio Memoriae' in a very detailed and extremely dark, but also enlightening way.
