Roel de Haan : Maladie is a German band and the ‘Of Harm And Salvation’ is their fourth full-length. Maladie plays black metal residing at the progressive/avant-garde side of spectrum. Incorporating strings, saxophone, bassy clean vocals and piano into their sound and employing complex structures to tie it all together. With a little imagination one could say they are a mix of Solefald, early Borknagar and Arcturus. Perhaps with a whiff of Emperor in the more extreme parts. An open mind is required that for sure. The lengthy tracks are intense and offer a myriad of emotions. Sometimes this becomes a bit overbearing. Besides this qualm and the relatively thin production, ‘Of Harm And Salvation’ poses an interesting and quite original listen for the more daring black metal fans.
