Patrick : Aerith ... many gaming enthusiasts will recognize the name as a female member of the ecological warrior group Avalanche from Final Fantasy VII (1997). Her death in the game has been seen as gripping by many and players of the game see Aerith (in the translation: Aeris) as one of the most popular female figures in the game. That the character still impresses years later can be seen from the fact that Ken Bedene (Aborted), Aaron Green and Frank Bedene have named their musical project after her. “Besides the fact we are nerds and huge fans of the game, we love what the character represented in the story of FF7 and thought it would be a great fit for the project.” And so, it happened ...

The trio plays melodic death metal that is in line with acts like Scar Symmetry and Soilwork in terms of freshness and melodic colouring. Although there is plenty of room for melodic structures and compelling choruses ('Fractured Soul', 'A Cosmic Calling'), this is fortunately not at the expense of fierceness and aggression ('Beyond Terminus', 'The Uprising'). With that, all the strong holders of the album are immediately mentioned, except for one. Absolute power of the EP is the diversity; there is a lot of variation between the tracks, but also within the tracks themselves that is strongly applied. They each know subtle tempo and atmosphere changes and they are all elaborated in great detail. The keyboard adds an atmospheric layer to the music and in 'Beyond Terminus' and 'Fractured Soul' the heavy roar of vocalist Green creates a beautiful, atmospheric contrast with the clean, high vocals of guest singer Mel Rose (Mechina). All this means that 'Aerith' captivates the entire time. In the elaboration the three members get some support: the album is interspersed with guest performances. Melissa Rosenburg (Mel Rose from Mechina) does some vocals on 'Beyond Terminus and ‘Fractured Souls' and you will encounter guitar solos by Benjamin Ellis (Scar Symmetry), Mike "Lonestar" Carrigan (Darkest Hour), Chris Themelco (Orpheus Omega), John Abernathy (Wastewalker) and Marios Iliopoulos (Nightrage).

'Aerith' is a very warm, colourful and varied acquaintance with a promising project. So far, the EP is only digitally available. Lovers of modern melodic death metal in the line of the aforementioned bands have a compulsory listening (read: purchase) to do.
