Elisabeth : Tortharry has been releasing music continually over the past years and they can look back on a repertoire of eight full length albums. In 2018 these three Czech musicians around singer Dan Pavlik celebrate their 25th anniversary as a band, and what better way to celebrate this with album number nine?
Musically Tortharry goes for continuity as well and this is the best way to deliver high quality albums, because the knowledge and experience these guys display can only be gained when playing together for such a long time, and this clearly true for Tortharry. ‘Sinister Species’ is a solid and easy accessible album. Ever since the nineties their style is deeply rooted in classic death metal and they don’t mess around with crap like keyboards, synths or other trends. Tortharry is all about uncompromising death metal. Groovy here and there, but other than that the band keeps it tight and sometimes a little bit technical. As an old-school death metal fan, what else would you want? Sure, I am missing some really catchy tunes here or there, but all in all ‘Sinister Species’ is an above average record.
In the past few days I have been listening to this record and older releases of the band intensely and I must admit that I hadn’t heard of this fine band before and this, their eight release, is my first introduction to Tortharry. Not having them on the radar before was definitely a mistake! If you don’t know Tortharry yet, then don’t wait to check them out with their latest album ‘Sinister Species’, because it is a really strong release.
