Wim S. : Aah, that's nice. Those first minutes of 'Hyborian Vol.1' from the band Hyborian are just great. A wonderfully mysterious intro of a few minutes after which a very fine guitar riff pulls the song 'As Above So Below' completely out of the starting blocks. And when the vocals are added, the whole thing reminds us the most of the ADHD period of Mastodon. Therefore very nice. Hyborian is a fourpiece from America who are often described as a stoner band, but as far as I am concerned that is absolutely inadequate; it is just a modern metal / rock band that can make quite an impression with this disc.

There is a lot of energy coming from Hyborian. The vocal lines are intense and the music sounds mostly a bit too chaotic, not to say raised. Sometimes the gentlemen go a bit too far in the hectic (‘Blood For Blood’), leaving the listener just gasp for breath. You do not have time to recover because in 'Dead Lies Dreaming' the band presses the accelerator again in a gigantic way. The coolest song is 'Ajna' especially because the tempo is lower and the riff sounds very gritty. As the best work of Mastodon. And that is a compliment alright. The demo ends with the song 'Dross' which sounds the most metal of all tracks on this release. If the band starts to dose a little more Hyborian can grow into a big unit. The talent is there.
