Jori : Chris Bay, is that not the singer and guitarist of Freedom Call? The very same indeed, and this Chris Bay now released a solo album with pop rock songs! ‘Chasing The Sun’ is a collection of creative splurge by the power metal German that was not suitable to fit in the Freedom Call oeuvre, but was too much valued by the good man to let it gather dust. Listening through these compositions it is abundantly clear that the maker of this is the same creative mastermind as the one that has been bringing us happy metal for years. Just listen to the opening sounds of ‘Flying Hearts’ or the vocal lines on video clip single ‘Radio Starlight’. And then there is the recognisable voice of Chris Bay, who now also explores his lower regions. This is very clear on ‘Move On’, one of the best songs on the album. This is not power metal even in the most broad meaning of the word, but the ability of Bay to write catchy tunes clearly passes genre boundaries with ease.
This will be obligatory purchase for die-hard Freedom Call fans no matter what, though the expectation is that it will inevitably disappear in the back of the cd rack after one or two spins. Freedom Call fans will always be metal heads and will not suddenly start listening to pop music all day long. But now Michael Kiske is suddenly seeing money in metal again, maybe Chris Bay will be a good replacement for the now hibernating Kiskean pop projects like Place Vendome and Supared? After all he manages this style quite well on a vocal level.
