Roel de Haan : ‘12 Winter Moons Comes The Witches Brew’ is the third full-length by the Australian act Arkheth. Earlier albums were inspired by nature and could be considered as reasonably traditional sounding. On ‘12 Winter Moons Comes The Witches Brew’ they however employ a different approach. Experimental, often psychedelic black metal combined with more straightforward parts spiced with jazzy saxophones (which is getting stale by now). Like Oranssi Pazuzu meets Ancient. Symphonic elements add a bombastic touch to the lengthy and jarring songs, while the trollish rasps give it a somewhat old-school vibe. To me the sudden weird elements are too sudden to generate the avant-garde feel they are going for. It comes and goes without any reason or context and the contrast with the more straightforward elements merely gives it a disjointed feel. ‘12 Winter Moons Comes The Witches Brew’ seems experimental merely for the sake of experimentation and seems to serve no other purpose than this.
