Dennis : Fans of bestial war metal bands like Archgoat, Black Witchery or Blasphemy will most likely also enjoy ‘Sepulchral Chants of Self-Destruction’ the debut album of the Finnish band Blood Chalice. The band was formed in early 2015 by Torture Killer and Retaliatory Measures vocalist Pessi Haltsonen and Retaliatory Measures drummer Ville-Petteri Lammasniemi, and started out as a two-man’s band initially. Soon the line-up was completed by guitarist Henri Virolainen and bassist Toni-Pekka Iisakkala and the band released their first recordings in the form of a 5-track demo, simply entitled ‘Demo 2016’. Blood Chalice worked on more material, got signed by the Swedish label Regain Records and their debut album ‘Sepulchral Chants of Self-Destruction’ is scheduled for a February release.
On this, their first full length album, the Fins leave a destructive impression behind with blasphemous brutality. The album contains eleven full speed ahead blackened death metal with raging down-tuned guitar riffs, bestial and aggressive drumming and a vocalist who spews his misanthropic gal over humanity and makes no secret of his hatred against Christianity. The whole album reeks of blasphemy and the band shows no sign of mercy. The songs are short yet explosive bursts of hate and aggression, mostly high velocity blackened death metal with a touch of grindcore, and some mid-paced parts in between in order to create the right balance and right dynamics to keep the album interesting and give the drummer some time to breathe. Blood Chalice are true masters in their art and know how to write powerful extreme war metal songs. The production is really powerful and clear, all the instruments are really well balanced in the mix and it does justice to the songs, which is another reason why ‘Sepulchral Chants of Self-Destruction’ is such an enjoyable album to listen to, if you’re a fan of extreme metal, that is. After twenty six minutes of total devastation and self-destruction the band ends the record in style with an outro full of screaming women and bleating goats. This is a fucking brilliant piece of aggressive war metal…aaaaarrgh!!
