Henk : Soldiers Of Solace is a new typical US heavy rock band. The influences of big, commercially successful bands such as Creed, Five Finger Deathpunch and especially Shinedown are a obvious. Is that a bad thing? No, because Soldiers Of Solace still manages to achieve a sound of their own that is slightly heavier than the aforementioned three. Singer Jason Longo sounds like a mix of Scott Stapp (Creed) and Brent Smith (Shinedown), making the whole band sound rather commercial. It would not surprise me if this album will be a great success in the US.
While the album opens pretty heavy with 'Rude Awakening' and the title track 'We Are Immortal' the album also has some more accessible, radio friendly material such as 'Walk Tall' and 'Circus Clown'. But just when you think the album is going all commercial, the Five Finger Deatpunch like 'Dear John' blast out of your speakers. 'Freedom's Children' then puts a thin line to Metallica's 'Don’t Thread On Me'. The longest track of the album and the most deviant of the other material and therefore in my opinion also the best song. This is one of those songs that makes audiences jump on summer festivals. It is a shame that the album is closed with the very moderate acoustic 'Hannah'. All in all a great debut from these Americans. I'm curious how successful this will be on the other side of the ocean. Musically they have it all with 'We Are Immortal'.
