Roel de Haan : Alkaloid already released ‘The Malkuth Grimoire’ on cd in 2015, but Season Of Mist now re-releases this album on vinyl only. For the collectors and as appetizer for a forthcoming second album. Alkaloid plays progressive and technical death metal. Featuring (ex-) members of Dark Fortress, Obscura and others; one can even say this is an all-star band. Alkaloid main strength is their (rare) ability to combine technical prowess with actual song-writing and even atmosphere. This is something extraordinary in the technical death metal scene. Alkaloid also incorporates many progressive elements into their music, sporadic cleans vocals, introspective calmer part and even a (possible) homage to Morbid Angel (‘Cthulu’). The more technical parts are often quite strange and bewildering, rather than mere showing off. For me personally this makes them easier to digest, but could potentially scare people off. Their loss though. Alkaloid is one of those rare bands that prove that technicality can be used to express other things than the musician’s vanity. ‘The Malkuth Grimoire’ was impressive upon first release and still is.
