Roel de Haan : The black metal veterans of Abigor need no introduction even if you are only mildly interested in the genre. These Austrians have a reputation for creating challenging and often chaotic black metal. On their tenth album called ‘Höllenzwang (Chronicles Of Perdition)’ this is the case as well. The recording approach is traditional: no overdubs, no multi-tracking or any other trickery. However, the actual style isn’t that traditional at all. Abigor continues on their frantic path they truly cemented on ‘Fractal Possesion’. Melodic, twisted and rather fragmented. ‘Höllenzwang (Chronicles Of Perdition)’ is at its best when Abigor plays at higher tempos. The complexity and aggression then collide masterfully and the result is a truly malignant atmosphere. The sporadic semi-operatic vocals are an additional epic touch and are highlights throughout this intense rollercoaster of an album. ‘Höllenzwang (Chronicles Of Perdition)’ is an album that needs a certain experience and open-mindedness from the listener, but certainly is a rewarding album.
