Sjak : The English outfit Metaprism released their very meritorious debut album ‘The Human Encryption’ in 2015, which is now followed by this ‘Catalyst To Awakening’. Still the band plays modern, melodic metal in which the alternation between male and female vocals is the biggest eye-catcher again. At times that brings us quite a pleasant and exciting “beauty and the beast” effect and that definitely contributes to the variety of this record. Furthermore I have to conclude that the band has certainly made a very positive development in the song writing department in comparison to their debut album and that deserves respect.
The lovely song material provides both guitar players Ollie Roberts and Callum Downing lots of opportunities to showcase their capabilities on the six strings and as such they deliver a number of very worthwhile riffs. That immediately is shown when after the intro ‘The Awakening’ the song ‘Codex Regius’ is started, in which next to the neat riffs also the fine vocals of the duo Joey Draper and Theresa Smith sound very convincing. Also in tunes like ‘Anomalous II: Ghost Of Asylum’ (on which Delain’s Timo Somers is player a guest solo), the single ‘Unleash The Fire’, ‘Aftermath’ and ‘Unanimous’ the strong points of this outfit are clearly visible and they know how to couple melody to power in a very nice way. The quality level is however still not consistent enough to talk about a real outlier in the genre, but if they can keep up the progression that they’ve shown with respect to their debut album, that will definitely be the case with a possible next record. For now we can categorize this ‘Catalyst To Awakening’ as a strong melodic metal album, which is entertaining from start to finish because of the good song material and the vocal variety.
