Vera : Ten years ago the cheerful Scottish pirates (and few Irishmen) from Alestorm blew us away with a tempestuous debut that instantly gave them international fame. ‘Captain Morgan’s Revenge’ marked the start of pirate metal as we know it today. The album included many songs that would become legendary classics to sing along, such as the title track, ‘Over The Seas’ and the alcoholic hymns ‘Nancy The Tavern Wench’ and ‘Wenches & Mead’. From then on the appearance of Alestorm on festivals caused proper migrations on these festivals, all armed with drinking horns and mead. In this respect we like to refer to our earlier review of ’Captain Morgan’s Revenge’, written by colleague Nima.
It was the beginning of a triumphal march that goes on until today. Now Napalm re-releases this debut album in an upgraded version. Their permanent producer Lasse Lammert regaled it with a new mix and mastering at his LSD Studios, the artwork has been refreshed and you get a bonus CD with the Alestorm show at Summer Breeze 2015. As always, the audio recordings of that festival are excellent and it means that you have some later hits to listen to as well. Of course a DVD with also visual pleasure would have been better, but let’s have a party anyways. These rum drinking guys are already booked at many summer festivals in 2018.
