Koen W. : Frost Giant is an American band that gives the pagan and folk metal world a solid slap in the face with 'The Harlot Star'. They combine the best of folk and pagan with heavy metal, punk, hardcore, power metal and death metal. This provides the slightly saturated genre with a breath of fresh air. They released two EPs in the past, but those never reached our neck of the woods. 'The Harlot Star' can therefore be considered as their debut album. The band regularly works with shorter instrumental tracks that can be considered as a sort of interlude. That are shorter acoustic songs as well as an a cappella sung piece with a turbulent sea in the background. The real songs are a combination of grunts with clean vocals, many choir songs and pirate refrains to pieces of accordion interspersed with furious outbursts. A lot of boundaries are being broken and it's variety all over. Even the longer songs with sometimes a playing time of over ten minutes are not boring. Personally I am not really the biggest folk metal fan, but this album quite convinced me.
