Job : The short instrumental ‘Awaken’ opens this debut by relatively fresh players Lava Invocator from Ukraine. Black metal like the good old days – that’s what on display on this debut that was released in March of 2017. The not-so-gentle men use influences from many Scandinavian bands that came before them like Marduk, Gorgoroth and Immortal, but mostly seem to take from the Inquisition school of the genre. The sporadic melodic passages are a breath of fresh air in the vortex of blast beats and shrieks and the vocals are quite dynamic in their mix of highs and lows. Other than that, the band hardly adds to the tried and true black metal formula and not many of the songs stick well enough. It’s definitely pitch black though, and the production value is good enough that I’m going to recommend this to the intermediate to experienced black metal head. The ones with the black leather vests and the corpsepaint.
