Pim B. : Apophys from the Netherlands made a fine impression on me with their debut ’Prime Incursion’. The same goes for their sophomore release ‘Devoratis’, a concept album based on a science fiction story by singer Kevin Quilligan. After the release of the debut the band underwent some line-up changes and they left Metal Blade for Ultimate Massacre Productions. When it comes to the music I feel not a lot has changed opposed to the debut. Still Apophys captures your attention with accessible compositions despite the brutal character. This, to me, is a real selling point. Quite often bands within this genre tend to forget it’s not only about brutality and showing off technical skills. Music relies on a proper song and Apophys manages to write those. The fact this album sounds really well is the icing on the cake. A fine release to start this year with.
