Sjak : Allyson Avenue singer Anette Olzon of course became best known for her contribution to the great Nighwish albums ‘Dark Passion Play’ and ‘Imaginaerum’. The last mentioned record was immediately her last feat with this Finish band, as she was friendly although urgently requested to leave the band. In 2014 she released a quite subdued solo album entitled ‘Shine’, but shortly thereafter it became real quiet around miss Olzon. Now she’s back with her new band The Dark Element, in which she has started a collaboration with the Finish guitar player Jani Liimatainen, who used to be active in Sonata Arctica.
The song material of The Dark Element shows much resemblance with….Nightwish, but then with less bombastic elements and with a more commercial approach. On this album Anette proves to be a mighty-fine singer, who almost effortlessly is capable in handling both the low and high regions of the musical spectrum. Tunes like ‘The Ghost And The Reaper’, the ballad ‘Heaven Of Your Heart’, ‘Last Good Day’ and the catchy ‘My Sweet Mystery’ are just great songs and as a matter of fact that accounts for the whole album. Of course you can complain that there’s an abundance of Nightwish influences present on ‘The Dark Element’, but the essence of the matter is whether there is good song material offered here and I can certainly confirm that. Call it a light-weight version of Nightwish, but the fact remains that this debut album of The Dark Element has made a very positive impression on me and I think that this material will be suited for a broad audience.
