Marcel H. : Take some funeral doom, some black metal, some death metal and some sludge and a tiny pinch of post metal, mix it together and you get ‘Portals Into Futility’ by Usnea. The band manages to make it all sound coherent and covers 55 minutes in five songs. Usnea alternates the raw and rough parts with serene parts and keeps it dynamic and interesting in this way. From time to time some dissonance can be perceived. For me ‘Portals Into Futility’ is my first acquaintance with Usnea on album. And it has to be said that this acquaintance has been a very pleasant one. A mighty fine album. Check it out if you like the sound of the mix of the aforementioned styles.
