Koen W. : The Austrian outfit Darkfall is already a veteran in the death thrash metal scene. They have been in existence since 1995 and even received the award of best Austrian metal band by the Stormbringer.at magazine in 2013. Nevertheless, they never really broke through or enjoyed international recognition.
'At The End Of Times' is their sixth album. In the meanwhile, the band knows how to make a good death metal album. Every now and then you hear a sharp, more thrash-oriented riff, but influences from that genre seems to have been limited to a minimum. Singer Thomas has an amazing grunting voice and knocks down everything down his way. Heavy drumming and solid guitar work do the finishing part. However, there is not really much variety to hear, and hen the long playing time becomes a bit too much. Adding a few samples cannot really change anything here. The only exception is the track 'Blutgott'. It starts with some softer guitar work and sounds a lot more melodic than the rest. Halfway there are even softer passages and a nice siren like voice to hear. Fans of the genre will surely appreciate the album. Starters for who this is their first encounter with death / thrash will feel somewhat uncomfortable.
