Sjak : Despite the fact that the from Birmingham, England hailing Devilfire is a relatively new band, they have already played as “special guest” in the support slot for ex-Nightwish singer Tarja Turunen and to be able to do that you must have certain capabilities. Now they release their long expected debut album with this ‘Dark Manoeuvers’, which contains thirteen tracks, and the big question is of course whether they are capable of displaying their good reputation from the live circuit also on record. I must say that after some initial hesitation I can be quite positive about that.
The band is playing fairly melodic hard rock with a big role for the lively riffs of both guitar players Baz Blackett and Richard Bloomer-Davies and the prominently present voice of singer Alex Cooper. I must honestly admit that it took me some time to get used to the somewhat rough voice of mister Cooper, but after a few listens songs like ‘(In And Out Of Love) All Of The Time’, ‘She’s Like Fire’, ‘Waiting For A Rockstar’ and the great ‘Kill Your Love’ truly come to life and then you really start to appreciate the music of Devilfire. Without immediately claiming that Devilfire will conquer the world, they have in any case released quite a nice debut album by means of this ‘Dark Manoeuvers’, which will definitely be appreciated by the fans of traditional melodic hard rock.
