Exit Eden - Rhapsodies In Black

Label : Napalm Records | Archive under gothic metal

Release type: Full-length CD

Sjak : Exit Eden is a collaboration between four female singers, which release their debut album with this ‘Rhapsodies In Black’ record. That is by the way absolutely not to say that we’re dealing with a number of inexperienced ladies here, because if you bring together Amanda Sommerville (Trillium, Avantasia), Marina La Torraca (Avantasia, Phantom Elite), Clémentine Delauney (Vision Of Atlantis, Serenity, Whyzdom) and Anna Brunner (a young, talented new star on the horizon), then you’ve been able to create a very interesting project. Therefore it’s a bit of a shame that this foursome has chosen not to place their own song material on this debut album, but instead to give eleven songs of well-known pop artists a (gothic) metal treatment. That certainly accounts for quite an interesting album, especially for those who are open minded enough to appreciate pop hits, though in a metal jacket.

It may be obvious that the vocals of the above mentioned ladies are the biggest asset of the album and that is clearly shown in some of the songs on offer here. Just listen to the versions of Rihanna’s ‘Unfaithful’, Madonna’s ‘Frozen’, Kate Perry’s ‘Firework’ and Adele’s ‘Skyfall’, who are all beautifully presented and on which the diversity of the voices of the ladies is merged in a very lovely way. There are however also a number of tunes which are not as much to my liking like for instance the Bryan Adams’ cover ‘Heaven’ and especially Bonnie Tyler’s ‘Total Eclipse’, of which the original just can’t be equaled. That doesn’t take anything away from the fact that this ‘Rhapsodies In Black’ in my opinion has become a very well-succeeded cover album, on which the vocal performance of Amanda Sommerville, Marina La Torraca, Clémentine Delauney and Anna Brunner is just outstanding. Let’s hope that this outfit will stay together and they dare to start releasing their own material as well…
