Wim S. : The Quill is back! In the original line up that is, so with singer Magnus Ekwall. And that's fine if you realize that Ekwall really has a spectacular voice. His successor, Magnus Arnar, had a great voice, but with his vocals the band went more towards grunge. With Ekwall behind the microphone, The Quill sounds like they should sound: like true seventies hardrock. We hear the Black Sabbath influences, especially in the atmosphere ('Ghosthorse', 'Keep It Together'). Hamfisted, with a lot of mystery. And just listen to that bass sound of Roger Nilsson! Absolutely great! It has been a while since I have heard a Kyuss-like stoner sound like in 'The Spirit And The Spark'! What a groove! Very clever the band knows to combine traditional classic rock with stoner songs and / or more doomy tracks. Well, what should I tell more about this disc? It has no use going through all the different songs; they are all great rock songs, performed by four highly talented Swedish musicians.
