Sjak : With most eighties fans the name of Parramore McCarty will definitely ring a bell, because back then he was the singer that provided the vocals for the fantastic album ‘Fighting For The Earth’ (from 1985) of the American band Warrior. In that period he was also active in the band of Billy Idol’s guitar player Steve Stevens, being Atomic Playboys. Also after the heydays of Warrior McCarty remained active in that same band for a large number of years, until finally pulling the plug in 2014. Now he’s back at the front with his new band Radioation Romeos.
Where Warrior was truly a traditional heavy metal band, the music of Radiation Romeos contains a lot more A.O.R.-influences and in my opinion that doesn’t really match with the voice of Parramore McCarty. When guitar player Dag Heyne is really going crazy, McCarty sounds very strong but when the material is slightly less heavy and sometimes even bluesy the vocal performance isn’t that convincing. It looks like they tried to bet on two horses with the song material and that wasn’t a very good choice. As a result of this this debut record has become a bit of an inconsistent affair, while the vocal capabilities of Parramore McCarty can do much more. Therefore I hope that for a possible next album they will return to the traditional heavy metal that made Warrior a well-known act in the genre and which suits Parramore McCarty’s voice much better. Now the album remains stuck in the average category, which is somewhat of a missed opportunity.
